NEW DELHI — H.E. Mrs. Aliki Koutsomitopoulou has concluded her diplomatic tenure as Greece’s Ambassador to India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and the Maldives, marking the end of an important chapter in Greece’s diplomatic engagement with South Asia.

Her departure has been accompanied by expressions of appreciation from Indian officials for her contribution to the development of bilateral relations. The farewell meetings highlighted the importance both countries attach to maintaining close diplomatic communication and strengthening cooperation across a range of shared interests.

India Recognises Her Contribution to Bilateral Relations

On October 19, 2026, India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, received Ambassador Koutsomitopoulou for a farewell call in New Delhi.

In a public message following the meeting, Jaishankar described the growth in India–Greece bilateral relations during her tenure as impressive, expressed appreciation for her contribution and wished her success in her future endeavours.

The meeting followed an earlier farewell call on October 16 with Sibi George, Secretary (West) at India’s Ministry of External Affairs. The Indian side also acknowledged her role in deepening bilateral ties and conveyed its best wishes.

“Her tenure has seen an impressive growth in our bilateral ties.”

A Strategic Partnership Between Greece and India

Greece and India have continued to develop their relationship through high-level diplomatic engagement and cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Their strategic partnership offers opportunities for closer collaboration in trade, shipping, maritime affairs, investment, tourism, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges.

As a country with a longstanding maritime tradition and a strategic position in southeastern Europe, Greece provides an important European partner for India. At the same time, India’s economic scale and international role offer significant potential for Greek businesses, cultural institutions and educational organisations.

Sustaining this momentum will depend on continued dialogue, practical cooperation and initiatives that bring the two societies closer together.

A Diplomatic Career Spanning Europe, Africa and Asia

Ambassador Koutsomitopoulou joined the Hellenic Foreign Service in May 1998. Her diplomatic career has included assignments at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens, the Greek embassies in Madrid and Cairo, and Greece’s Permanent Representation to the European Union.

She previously served as Deputy Head of Mission at the Greek Embassy in New Delhi from 2013 to 2018, before returning to India in her subsequent ambassadorial role. Her professional experience reflects a career devoted to international relations, diplomatic dialogue and the representation of Greek interests abroad.

Strengthening Greece’s Presence Across South Asia

Her diplomatic responsibilities extended beyond India to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and the Maldives. These countries offer Greece opportunities for engagement in tourism, maritime cooperation, cultural exchange, education and broader international dialogue.

Maintaining relationships across such a diverse region requires sustained diplomatic engagement and an understanding of each country’s priorities. The conclusion of her tenure therefore represents both a personal professional transition and an opportunity to reflect on the importance of Greece’s continued presence in South Asia.

A New Chapter

The Hellenic Indian Society for Culture and Development has extended its best wishes to Ambassador Koutsomitopoulou, expressing the hope that the next chapter of her life will bring success and happiness.

As her diplomatic assignment comes to a close, the wider objective remains clear: to preserve the goodwill established between Greece and its South Asian partners and to encourage new opportunities for cooperation, cultural understanding and friendship.

Hellenic Media Group’s Perspective

Diplomacy is built not only through official meetings and agreements, but also through trust, cultural understanding and enduring relationships between nations. The development of Greece’s international partnerships depends on the continued work of diplomats who create opportunities for dialogue and cooperation.

Ambassador Koutsomitopoulou’s departure provides an occasion to recognise the importance of Greece–India relations and the broader connections linking Greece with South Asia. The next phase will be an opportunity to build on these foundations and pursue new avenues of mutual benefit.
