Europe’s Top 20 Filming Cities for 2026: Athens Puts Greece on the Cinematic Map

ScoutAround’s production-focused ranking highlights Europe’s leading filming destinations, with Athens securing a place among the Top 20.

Athens ranks No. 14 in ScoutAround’s “Europe Top 20: Cities Worth Filming In — Ranking 2026,” drawing attention to Greece’s potential as a destination for international film and television productions.

Europe continues to attract filmmakers with its historic cities, modern production facilities and diverse landscapes. ScoutAround’s 2026 ranking compares European cities based on the practical conditions that influence production decisions, from infrastructure and costs to filming incentives and logistics.

London Leads Europe’s Filming Destinations

According to ScoutAround, London ranks first with 92 points, followed by Berlin with 88 and Budapest with 86. Prague and Paris complete the top five. The ranking assesses cities as production environments rather than simply as visually attractive destinations.

Its 12 evaluation factors include production infrastructure, filming incentives, crew availability, location diversity, operating costs, climate, safety, regulatory procedures and accessibility.

Athens at No. 14: History, Light and Cinematic Potential

Athens combines ancient landmarks, neoclassical architecture, contemporary urban life and access to Mediterranean coastal scenery. This diversity can offer filmmakers a range of distinctive settings for documentaries, feature films, television, commercials and music videos.

The city's climate and outdoor locations can be valuable for exterior-driven productions. As with every destination, however, successful filming also depends on permits, available crews, production services, budgets and suitable facilities.

Beyond Scenery: The Business of Filmmaking

A visually impressive destination is only one part of a successful production. Producers also need experienced technical crews, reliable suppliers, appropriate facilities, efficient administrative procedures and predictable costs.

International productions can generate opportunities for local professionals and businesses, including accommodation, transport, catering, equipment rental and location services. They can also introduce international audiences to a country's cultural heritage and contemporary creative industries.

An Opportunity for Greece

Greece's cinematic potential extends far beyond Athens. Historic towns, archaeological sites, mountain landscapes, islands and coastal settings offer a wide variety of locations for productions of different scales.

Strengthening production infrastructure, professional training, international partnerships and efficient filming procedures could help Greece build on these advantages and attract a broader range of audiovisual projects.

Athens' inclusion in ScoutAround's 2026 ranking provides another opportunity to highlight Greece's place in Europe's film landscape. The challenge is to connect the country's extraordinary visual assets with the professional services and production conditions required by international filmmakers.
