UN Peacekeepers Assess Humanitarian Needs in South Sudan's Lakes State

By Hellenic Media Group

Committed to protecting civilians and supporting long-term peace, Nepalese peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) recently carried out an integrated patrol in Mapourdit, located in Lakes State, South Sudan.

The patrol brought together peacekeepers, local authorities, and community representatives to assess the area's current security and humanitarian situation. While security conditions remain relatively stable, the mission identified several pressing challenges that continue to affect the daily lives of residents.

Among the most urgent concerns highlighted during the patrol were:

  • Prolonged drought, which has significantly worsened food insecurity across the region.
  • Critical shortages in schools and healthcare facilities, limiting access to education and essential medical services.
  • The continued presence of internally displaced persons (IDPs), placing additional pressure on already limited local resources.
  • The urgent need to repair water infrastructure and access roads before the onset of the rainy season, when many communities risk becoming isolated.

UNMISS emphasized that integrated patrols are a vital part of its mandate, allowing peacekeepers to maintain close contact with local communities, monitor security developments, and identify humanitarian needs before they escalate into larger crises.

The mission continues to work alongside national and local authorities, humanitarian organizations, and community leaders to strengthen stability, improve civilian protection, and support sustainable peace across South Sudan.

As South Sudan continues its journey toward lasting peace and development, initiatives such as these demonstrate that modern peacekeeping extends beyond military presence—supporting humanitarian resilience, community engagement, and sustainable stability.
