1. Dimitrios Kannavos : As a Greek actress, producer, and cultural organizer based in Prague, how has your international journey shaped your artistic identity and creative vision?
Vassia Bantiou : My artistic identity has been shaped by the intersection of Greek theatrical tradition and Prague’s international creative environment. Coming from Greece, I was influenced by a strong foundation in storytelling and performance, while living and working in Prague exposed me to diverse artistic approaches and collaborations.
This journey helped me develop a more open and interdisciplinary vision, blending different cultural perspectives. It also inspired my work as a producer and organizer, where I focus on creating platforms that connect artists across borders and encourage new forms of creative expression.
My work is driven by the belief that art transcends borders, and that meaningful collaboration can generate new forms of storytelling that reflect our shared human experience.
2. Dimitrios Kannavos : What inspired you to found the Prague Actors & Filmmakers Film Festival (PAFFF), and what mission did you want this festival to serve within the international film community?
Vassia Bantiou : The idea for the Prague Actors & Filmmakers Film Festival grew from my passion for connecting artists and celebrating the craft of acting and filmmaking. I wanted to create more than just a screening event—I envisioned a space where actors, directors, and creators from around the world could meet, exchange ideas, and inspire one another.
The festival’s mission is to champion emerging talent, encourage creative collaboration across borders, and highlight films that explore unique perspectives. It’s about building an international community that values storytelling as a shared human experience.
Dimitrios Kannavos : In your view, what role can film festivals play today in connecting artists, cultures, and new voices from different parts of the world?
Vassia Bantiou : Film festivals today are far more than showcases—they are powerful bridges between people, cultures, and ideas. Through cinema, we can experience the lives, dreams, and struggles of others, breaking down barriers of language, geography, and perspective. Each film is a story that carries a piece of its culture, and every festival becomes a meeting place where these stories intersect, creating understanding and empathy.
In this way, festivals can inspire collaboration, spark dialogue, and celebrate diversity. They remind us that, despite our differences, we share universal human emotions—love, hope, fear, and joy. By connecting artists and audiences from around the world, film festivals offer a vision of peace: one where art unites us, where storytelling becomes a common language, and where creativity fosters mutual respect and harmony across cultures.
Dimitrios Kannavos : How do you balance the different sides of your professional life — acting, producing, cultural organizing, and festival direction — while staying true to your artistic values?
Vassia Bantiou : Balancing acting, producing, cultural organizing, and festival direction requires a combination of focus, flexibility, and clear values. For me, it always starts with understanding the core of each responsibility and the impact it has on others. Acting demands full presence and emotional honesty, so it takes priority when I am performing or developing a role. Producing and festival work require strategic thinking and coordination, and these take the lead when planning events, managing projects, or supporting other artists.
What keeps me grounded across all these roles are my artistic values: authenticity, collaboration, and the belief in the transformative power of art. When I make decisions—whether choosing a project to act in, a film to feature, or a cultural initiative to launch—I ask myself if it aligns with these values and serves the broader artistic community. By letting purpose guide priorities, I can navigate multiple responsibilities without losing the integrity and vision that fuel my creative work.
Dimitrios Kannavos : As someone deeply involved in both performance and cultural leadership, what qualities do you believe define a strong and meaningful cultural ambassador?
Vassia Bantiou : A strong cultural ambassador, in my view, is someone who listens as much as they speak, bridging gaps between communities with curiosity, respect, and openness. It’s not only about representing a culture but also about creating meaningful exchanges—sharing stories, traditions, and perspectives in ways that inspire understanding and connection.
For me, being a cultural ambassador, like my recent role with the Hellenic Los Angeles Media Network, means championing dialogue between nations, fostering collaboration, and highlighting the shared values that unite us. Empathy, integrity, and passion for one’s culture are essential, but equally important is the willingness to celebrate diversity, turning differences into opportunities for learning and collective creativity.
Dimitrios Kannavos : How important is it for Greek artists and creatives living abroad to remain connected to their cultural roots while also building international collaborations?
Vassia Bantiou : For Greek artists and creatives living abroad, staying connected to their cultural roots is essential—it provides a foundation of identity, inspiration, and perspective that shapes their work. At the same time, building international collaborations allows them to grow, exchange ideas, and bring their unique voice to a global stage.
At the Prague Actors & Filmmakers Film Festival, we celebrate this balance every year, with the invaluable support of the Greek Embassy and close engagement with the Greek community in Prague. We strive to bring performances, films, and artistic projects from Greece to international audiences, creating opportunities for dialogue and cultural exchange.
Through my work with International Action Art, we further amplify this mission, connecting Greek and international artists in experimental and interdisciplinary projects. By blending heritage with global collaboration, Greek creatives can honor their roots while contributing to a vibrant, interconnected artistic world.
Dimitrios Kannavos : What challenges and opportunities have you encountered while promoting cinema and cultural dialogue in an international environment such as Prague?
Vassia Bantiou : Promoting cinema and cultural dialogue in a city like Prague comes with the challenge of bringing together artists and audiences from very different cultural and professional backgrounds. Each filmmaker, performer, and community brings its own perspective, and creating a space where everyone feels heard and valued takes careful planning, sensitivity, and adaptability. Funding and coordinating international projects can also be complex, especially when balancing multiple languages, schedules, and artistic visions.
At the same time, these challenges create incredible opportunities. Prague’s rich artistic heritage and openness to innovation make it a meeting point for global talent. Through the Prague Actors & Filmmakers Film Festival and International Action Art, we can foster collaborations that might not happen elsewhere, showcase diverse voices from around the world, and spark conversations that go beyond cinema—building cultural understanding, empathy, and shared creativity across borders. It’s a constant reminder that art can unite even the most different perspectives.
Dimitrios Kannavos : Through your work, have you seen cinema become a bridge between people of different backgrounds, and do you believe culture can still unite where politics often divides?
Vassia Bantiou : As has been mentioned before, cinema has an extraordinary power to bridge people of different backgrounds. Through my work with the Prague Actors & Filmmakers Film Festival, I’ve seen firsthand how films can open hearts and minds, fostering understanding where politics often creates division. By allowing all voices to be heard, we provide a platform for stories that might otherwise go unseen, creating a shared space for empathy and dialogue.
So far, we have received films from 25 different countries, each carrying its own culture, perspective, and message. This diversity reminds us that art can unite us even when the world seems divided, and that storytelling has the ability to promote peace, understanding, and cooperation. Culture, through cinema, gives us a language beyond borders—a way to connect, reflect, and imagine a world where humanity comes before conflict.
Dimitrios Kannavos : As Cultural Ambassador of the Hellenic Los Angeles Media Network, how would you like to contribute to strengthening ties between Greece, Europe, and the global creative community?
Vassia Bantiou : As Cultural Ambassador of the Hellenic Los Angeles Media Network, I want to create meaningful connections that highlight the richness of Greek culture while engaging with artists and audiences globally. My focus is on fostering collaboration, sharing creative practices, and supporting projects that bring fresh perspectives and innovation
I hope to organize initiatives, screenings, and performances that showcase Greek artistry alongside international work, encouraging dialogue and mutual inspiration. By doing so, we can celebrate cultural diversity, promote understanding, and demonstrate how creativity can serve as a unifying force in today’s complex world.
Dimitrios Kannavos : Looking ahead, what are your hopes for the future — both for your own artistic journey and for the broader role of festivals and cultural platforms in supporting independent cinema and international cooperation?
Vassia Bantiou : Looking ahead, I hope to continue expanding my own artistic journey while creating new opportunities for others to connect, learn, and grow. I plan to develop seminars, workshops, and festivals that encourage creativity, experimentation, and collaboration among artists from different backgrounds.
Through these initiatives, I aim to support independent cinema, share meaningful stories, and bring important messages to audiences around the world. By building platforms for dialogue and artistic exchange, my goal is to inspire innovation, celebrate diverse voices, and strengthen the role of culture in fostering understanding, empathy, and global connection.
